Ashes - A New Take on Zombies

Ashes
Ashes Trilogy #1

It could happen tomorrow . . .

An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions.

Alex hiked into the woods to say good-bye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crushes her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom—a young soldier—and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP.

For this improvised family and the others who are spared, it’s now a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human.

Author Ilsa J. Bick crafts a terrifying and thrilling post-apocalyptic novel about a world that could become ours at any moment, where those left standing must learn what it means not just to survive, but to live amidst the devastation.

I read this book back in October and I was wowed. The zombies in this book were, well, different. When these zombies showed up things got more interesting. I was dragging reading it before that. I didn't like the insta-love between Tom and Alex. I liked Chris more. The changes Alex went through- the gift she got was uniquely creepy but useful. The first portion focused on Alex, Ellie and Tom seeking shelter and surviving. Later on, due to some circumstances, Alex lost Ellie and Tom and found herself in a community free of infection much like Woodbury in The Walking Dead. +_+ She doesn't really trust the folks there but she persists. At the end, she does flee but what she discovers shakes her to the core.

I will definitely be reading the sequel. Anyone who likes zombies and unique adaptation to circumstances will like this.
Teaser Quote:

Squealing, Ponytail Blonde made a grab for her companion’s tasty treat, but Basketball Boy let out a warning grunt and batted her hands away. Pouting—yes, Alex thought crazily, she’s pissed—Ponytail Blonde tossed her head hard enough to make her filthy hair dance.
My Rating:
Have you read Ashes? What did you think of it?
Happy Reading.
